Evidence-based programme to prevent and reduce bullying
Developed at the University of Turku, Finland (with funding from the Finnish Ministry of Education and Culture)
The meaning of ”KiVa”: ”Nice” and ”against bullying”
Goals of the KiVa programme
To reduce bullying
To prevent new bullying cases from emerging
To minimise negative effects caused by bullying
Providing important learning experiences for our tamariki:
treating others with respect
resisting peer pressure
taking responsibility
It is important that all the students understand that they can make a difference!
“Let’s stop bullying together!”
What is bullying?
Harmful behaviour/degrading treatment that is:
deliberate
repeated
targeted at a relatively defenseless or a less powerful person
Types of bullying
Verbal: name-calling, public ridicule
Indirect: such as excluding a person from a group, or spreading mean stories about him/her
Physical: pushing, hitting, kicking…
Cyberbullying: relatively new using computers and cell phones
What is not bullying?
Bullying is not...
