Learning at Home Tips:

Keep lessons brief – less is more.
Work at their speed.
Work your schedule around family life, don’t feel pressured to do a 9-3 day.
The learnings out of this historic time will be more important than whether they completed a worksheet or not.
Google what’s a “free” for NZ home school resources there could be some handy websites.
After lunch do 20 minutes silent-reading in rooms – give everyone breathing space.
Give older children a detailed timetable so they can work more independently.

ACTIVITY	LEARNING EXPERIENCE
Baking	Children learn math skills such as measurement ½ and ¼s Looking at the use of language like full, half full, more, less, adding, look at the symbols on the cooking utensils or units used when baking (tsp, Tbsp, ml, L, kg, g)
Playing Board Games	Children learn social skills – taking turns, resilience. Looking at the patterns on the dice and instantly recognising the patterns
Daily Diary	Talk about your writing Practice forming letters Record basic words Sequence their ideas
Science- Twinkle	Use the vocabulary of science Talk about what you see happening Measure the ingredients
EOTC	Go for a walk and look at the letterboxes and the numbers.Talk about the numbers you see. Look at the street names and focus on the letters they see. Name the letters. Collect things from nature. Make collections and count them and describe their collection. Count your steps, counting to 20 then counting down then counting up to 100. Play eyespy as you walk around. Explore the beach and look at the environment around them. Do some fitness- skipping, running, walking, bike riding.
Read Books with your Children	Oral language. Talk about the book. What do you see? What’s happening? Vocabulary Discussions about zones of characters Relating to own experiences and writing Play eye spy throughout the pages Listen to your child read, read to them, take turns reading
Performing Arts	Listening to appropriate music Give opportunities to draw and write about their drawings. Youtube sounds of animals and vehicles. Let children close their eyes and guess the names of vehicles and animals.
Fine Arts	Observational drawing e.g go into garden and draw a flower Listen to a story and draw how you imagine the story.
